Autosave, Undo, and Slide History

How autosave works in the slide editor, and how to undo changes or go back to an earlier version of a slide

Written by Will Matysik

Why this article may apply to you

If DIGI, the DIGIDECK AI chat and editor assistant, has been turned on for your DIGIDECK, autosave has also been turned on. Autosave is what lets DIGI show you the edits you ask for in the chat as soon as they're made, without you having to save or refresh the slide.

This changes how saving works while you edit. Instead of making changes and then saving them, every change now saves as you make it. If you're used to trying out design or layout changes before deciding whether to save, you can still step back from a change by using undo for recent changes, or 'Slide History' to restore an earlier version of the slide.

Autosave

With autosave on, the 'Save' and 'Revert' buttons no longer appear at the top of the slide. While a change is saving, a 'Saving...' indicator with a loading icon appears next to the 'Slide Navigator' button.

Once your changes are saved, the indicator briefly changes to 'All changes saved' in green.

Undo and redo recent changes

The undo and redo buttons sit just to the right of the 'Edit' and 'Layout' tabs at the bottom of the editor, and they're available in both modes. Both buttons look disabled (light gray) until you make a change that can be undone or redone.

Once there's something to undo or redo, that button changes color: it turns white in 'Layout' mode and dark gray (close to black) in 'Edit' mode. When you hover over an active button, its button area is highlighted.

In the example below, compared to the image above, the text and the cash register icon have switched positions. The undo button (an arrow circling counterclockwise) is now active, so clicking it will undo the positioning changes.

After clicking undo, the text is back on the left side and the icon is back on the right side. The undo button is no longer active; instead, the redo button (an arrow circling clockwise) is active, so the changes that were just undone can be reapplied.

You can also undo and redo with keyboard shortcuts:

Windows: Ctrl + Z to undo, Ctrl + Shift + Z to redo
Mac: Cmd + Z to undo, Cmd + Shift + Z to redo

Note: Undo only tracks the changes you're making in your current editing session, and it can only remember a limited number of changes. Once the page is reloaded, or you reopen the presentation later, earlier changes can no longer be undone. Undo works best right after you make a change you want to reverse (for example, deleting a component by mistake). To go back further, use 'Slide History'.

Restore an earlier version with Slide History

To open 'Slide History', click the 'Slide' dropdown in the top toolbar while in 'Edit' mode, then select 'Slide History'.

The 'Slide History' window lists save points on the left side. Click a save point to load a preview of that version on the right side. Once you find the version you want, click the 'Restore Version' button in the bottom right corner of the window.
