Edit mode compared to Layout mode is strictly for updating content (text, images and media). Most multi-media Components content can be updated by hovering over the component and clicking on the edit buttons that appear.

When in Edit mode and editing any component, controls will appear when hovering over or interacting with them.
Basic users can be set to only have access to edit mode which ensures that layout stays consistent while allowing for content to be updated on a presentation basis.
How to Edit Text:
Click into a text area and make any updates or modifications.
Change Image:
Hover over an image you'd like to change or edit. Buttons will appear in the corner of the image. Click the button to modify.
Change Video:
Hover over a video you'd like to change or edit. Buttons will appear in the corner of the image. Click the button to modify video and settings.
